Doing the cache validation via Steam will not give you the latest files in ED's case. Perhaps the game data got corrupted (obviously, something is corrupted). Launchers for games are notoriously slow but that just doesn't sound right in your case. But those are store clients, not game clients. Moral Dignity Pants:Steam has hit close to 20 MEGABYTES (though usually 12) per second download speed sometimes, Origin has never come even close for me.
